The Key Element of My Cancer Battle Plan – More Sleep!

by Robert Warren Hess

I’ve just entered my 12th year of prostate cancer survivorship and I am two years into the phase where my prostate cancer may recur, so I’m very interested in doing everything I can to make my body inhospitible to cancer of any sort.

Two key elements of my cancer battle plan have been getting down to my ideal weight and exercising. My exercise program focuses mainly on bicycling and resulted in my ride around the world bicycle challenge – it took me 10 years to cover those 24,091.6 miles. You can join the challenge here – Around the World Bicycle Challenge.

The best defense against cancer is the body’s own immune system. We build – or tear down – our immune system by what we eat and do, particularly stress. Your body rebuilds it’s immune system while you sleep. If you get enough sleep that is!

And sleep is the one thing I always forget about. I’m busy, just like we all are, and getting everything done – family, work, writing, exercise – all takes precious time, and sleep seems to be free time. I can get along with just 6 hours of sleep. Can’t I?

How do You Know if Your Sleep Tank is Low?

Do you experience any of these symptoms?

  1. You find yourself yawning during the daybrain in hands 2QfQau
  2. You’re out cold the minute you close your eyes
  3. You find yourself re-reading sentences to understand what is being said (reading legal documents are exempt!)

Scientists still don’t know exactly why we sleep, but according to a near-constant stream of research, most of us need between six and eight hours of shut-eye each night. Unfortunately, only about 30% of us are getting it. That means 70 million Americans suffer from sleep deprivation, a certified public health epidemic, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The infographic below explains just what happens to your brain when you don’t get enough sleep. But now only does your brain suffer, but your immune system, the body’s critical defense against cancer, is weakened.
